Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Our aorta is the largest blood vessel of the body. Although aorta is a tough, durable workhorse, but sometimes its walls can weaken and bulge in which is called an aortic aneurysm. Because of this, blood can spills into our body.

Types of aortic aneurysm

Depending upon the parts of our body they effect, there are two different types of aortic aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm: It develops in the part of the aorta which is known as handle of the aorta that points down.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm:  It occurs in the section of the aorta that looks like the upside down U  at the top of the aorta.

Symptoms and causes of aortic aneurysm

Two major factors that play a role in the risk of developing the aortic aneurysm are family history, and the lifestyle. But it also occurs most often in people who:

  • Smoke
  • Have age above 65
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Stress

Causes of aortic aneurysm

Although the causes of aortic aneurysm are often unknown, but it can include:

  • Narrowing of the arteries
  • Inflammation of the arteries
  • Injury to an aorta
  • Inherited conditions
  • Infections

An aneurysm often doesn’t cause any symptoms until it  ruptures, that’s why in many cases people are unaware about the fact that they have an aortic aneurysm.

Symptoms of aortic aneurysm appear suddenly and may include the following:

  • Light headedness
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Sudden chest pain or back pain
  • Trouble in breathing or swelling
  • Feeling fullness in the stomach

Treatment of aortic aneurysm

Treatment of aortic aneurysm depends on some factors like the size, location and the factors that increase risk.

Small aortic aneurysm may be managed by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The major goal is to slow the growth of the aneurysm and lower the chance of rupture. Healthcare providers treat others problems also that can increase the risk of rapture like high blood pressure, Coronary heart disease etc. For larger aneurysm, surgery may be required.

In order to confirm aortic aneurysm, healthcare providers do imaging test of the chest.

If one have the symptoms, doctors can make the diagnosis with one of the several different test like:

  • Echocardiogram (ECG)
  • Ultrasound
  • MRI
  • CT scan

If the aneurysm is big, then doctors often recommend surgery. They’ll either replace or reinforce the damaged section of the aorta to make it stronger.

Two common Procedures are:

Open aneurysm repair: In this process the part of the aorta where the aneurysm is located is cut out, and an artificial tube called a graft is sewn in its place. If the aneurysm is close to where the aorta attaches to our heart, the valve between them may also be replaced.  This procedure most likely have if  aneurysm is in our chest. It can take a month or more to recover.

Endovascular aneurysm repair: It requires only small incisions in the groin. By  Using X-ray guidance and specially-designed instruments, the surgeon can repair the aneurysm by inserting a metal mesh coil, called a stent-graft, inside the aorta. All thoracic aneurysms cannot be repaired by means of EVAR.
