Hernia surgery

Hernia repair is a surgical procedure for the correction of a hernia. Hernia surgery is performed almost in every Indian hospital with high precision.

Abdominal area is place where most of the common hernias are likely to occur.

Types of hernia

There are some specific types of hernias.

Some of them are:

Inguinal hernia: These are the most common type of hernias, accounting for 75% of all hernias. They mostly affect male.

Femoral hernia: Femoral hernias occur when fatty tissue or part of your bowel protrudes into the groin at the apex of the inner thigh. The hernia pushes through a weak point in the surrounding abdominal wall into an area known as the femoral canal.

Types of hernia surgery

There are mainly three types of hernia repair.

Open hernia repair surgery:  Here a surgeon makes a single incision (cut) that allows them to operate on the herniated tissue. The organs and tissues are put back into place and use surgical instruments to stitch the tissue back together to make it stronger. Surgical mesh is often used to reinforce the tissue.

Robotic hernia repair surgery: In this type of laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgical instruments are used to operate. The surgeon works at a console driving the technology used to repair the weakened tissue causing the hernia.

Laparoscopic hernia repair: The surgeon makes small holes in the skin and he or she inserts a laparoscope which is a telescope-like instrument with a camera on the end, and long-handled surgical instruments through these small holes.

Signs of hernia

There are some warning sign of a hernia sac that’s stuck or strangulated, like Sudden and severe hernia pain or tenderness. This is life-threatening, and you’ll need emergency hernia surgery.

There are other signs also which can be considered as emergency. They may include

  • A bulge which doesn’t go back inside the abdomen like before did.
  • A bulge that’s suddenly gets larger.
  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Redness in the areas where the hernia is

How serious is a hernia?

Although most hernias aren’t serious, they can become more serious over time. A hernia can become serious if it becomes lodged in the opening that it has been pushed through and cannot be removed. This can cause pain and, in severe cases, can even cut off blood flow to the tissues.

If a hernia tends to get worse over time, it is likely that it will require surgical repair at some point.
